Pod almighty – new hostel opens

A former courthouse and jail has been transformed into a mixed “pod” hotel, hostel and social space by Pacific Building.

CoDE Pod Hostels – THE CoURT has been created within a Victorian A-listed building in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town and surrounded by the most tourist attractions.

The building at 1A Parliament Square – in the shadow of St Giles’ Cathedral – was originally designed as the Edinburgh police chambers and contained both holding cells and courtroom facilities including the former district court.

The oldest part of the court buildings was completed in 1693.

Working with a project team including Fitzsimons Ltd and Morgan Architects, the first phase involved the refurbishment of THE CoURT’s bar and reception areas.

Future phases include extension works to create new design-led bedrooms within the attic space, upgrades to the existing plant and insulating the new roof to improve the thermal fabric and the energy efficiency of the building.
